How to Troubleshoot When You Can’t Access a Specific Webpage


If you try to access a website and it doesn’t load, but others do, there could be a number of reasons. When the site itself is down, there’s not much you can do except waiting. If you can load the page on another computer or device, there may be a problem with your computer or network. There are some quick fixes that fix most issues, but you may have to get your hands a little dirty. You may need to run a virus or malware scan to fix an issue that is preventing you from accessing a particular website, you may need to check your browser settings or your Changing DNS settings if the scans don’t solve the problem.

Easy troubleshooting

Try loading the page on a different device or network.

You can also try using mobile data. Try loading the page on your phone or another computer. If the website loads there, the problem is with your computer. If the webpage doesn’t load there, the problem is either with the network or with the webpage itself. If possible, try loading the webpage on a different device that’s on the same network and a device that’s not on the same network. The easiest way is to load the website on your phone while still connected to the same WiFi as your computer, then disconnect your phone from WiFi and load the page using mobile data. This will help you determine if the problem is with your network or with the website. If the website does not load on any device, no matter what network it is connected to, then the website is most likely down. You can check this by monitoring the page with a monitoring service like “Is It Down Right Now?” ( ).

Restart your computer.

A simple restart often fixes the problem. Restart your computer and test the website again.

Try loading the webpage in a different browser.

Perhaps some settings are not configured correctly in a browser. If you’re using the default browser and don’t have another installed, you can quickly download and install another free browser, e.g. B. Firefox, Google Chrome or Opera.

Temporarily disable your virus scanner.

Your antivirus software may be interfering with the loading of certain websites. Try disabling the software and reloading the page. Right-click the antivirus icon in the system tray and select “Disable” or “Turn Off”. You may get a warning that this is not safe. Reactivate the virus scanner when you have completed your test.

Reset your modem and router.

Traffic to or from a particular website may trip up your router or modem. If you reset these devices, you may be able to access the website again. Unplug the power cords from the modem and router (if both are separate) and wait a minute. Plug the modem back in and wait for it to boot up. Plug it back into the router as well and wait for it to boot up. Visit the website again.

Check your computer’s date and time settings.

If either of these are set incorrectly, you may not be able to connect to secure ( https:// ) websites. Check your computer or cell phone clock to make sure the date and time are correct.

Make sure that no parental controls are activated.

If you have parental controls enabled, they can block access to certain websites. If you have access to it, disable parental controls and try accessing the website. How this is done depends on the respective software.

Check antivirus software

Uninstall Norton or McAfee.

These two antivirus programs are known to cause most of the problems while surfing the web. If you have one of these virus scanners installed, consider removing it and replacing it with a lightweight, unobtrusive virus scanner. Install a slim virus scanner as a replacement.

After removing the old virus scanner, you should make sure that you protect your computer with a new program. Read Install antivirus software for general installation instructions. Make sure you only have one virus scanner installed.

Having multiple antivirus programs installed at the same time can cause problems. Protection conflicts could result in webpages not loading. Keep the antivirus you like best and remove the rest. Check the browser settings

Make sure JavaScript is enabled.

If JavaScript is disabled, you will have trouble loading many popular websites. Check your browser settings to make sure it’s enabled. Internet Explorer – Click the Tools menu or gear button and select Internet Options. Click the Security tab, then click Custom Level. Scroll down to the Scripting section and set Active Scripting to Enable. Chrome – Click on the Chrome menu button and select “Settings”. Click the “Show advanced settings” link at the bottom, then click “Content settings” in the “Privacy” section. Make sure “Allow all sites to run JavaScript” is checked. Firefox – Type “about:config” in the address bar and confirm that you want to continue. Type “javascript.enabled” into the search box. Make sure the javascript.enabled value is set to true. Safari – Click on the Safari or Edit menu and select “Preferences”. Click the “Security” tab and check the “Enable JavaScript” box.

Remove extensions you don’t recognize.

An extension can cause problems with the browser. Disabling or deleting an extension that you don’t know or need can help. Your browser doesn’t need extensions, so you can safely disable any extension you come across. Internet Explorer – Click the Tools menu or gear button and select “Manage Add-ons”. Select extensions from the list and click Disable to turn them off. Chrome – Click the Chrome menu button and go to “More tools” → “Extensions”. Uncheck the “enabled” box for any extensions you want to turn off. Firefox – Click on the Firefox menu button and select “Add-ons”. Click the “Extensions” option in the menu on the left. Click the “Disable” button next to each extension. Safari – Click on the Safari or Edit menu and select “Preferences”. Click the “Extensions” tab, then uncheck the “Enable” box for each extension you want to turn off.

Check the browser connection settings.

If your browser is supposed to connect through a proxy server, you may experience connection problems. Check the connection settings and disable the proxy server to see if that solves the problem. Internet Explorer – Click the Tools menu or gear button and select Internet Options. Click on the “Connections” tab and then on the “LAN Settings” button. Check “Detect settings automatically” and uncheck “Use a proxy server for your LAN”. Chrome – Click on the Chrome menu button and select “Settings”. Click the “Show advanced settings” link at the bottom of the list. Scroll down and click the “Change proxy settings” button. Click the “LAN Settings” button. Check “Detect settings automatically” and uncheck “Use a proxy server for your LAN”. Firefox – Click on the Firefox menu button and go to “Options”. Select the “Advanced” option from the menu and then click on the “Network” tab. Click the “Settings” button and then select “No proxy” or “Use system proxy settings”. Safari – Click on the Safari or Edit menu and select “Preferences”. Click the “Advanced” tab and then click the “Change settings” button. Uncheck all active proxy settings.

Reset your browser.

If you still can’t connect, then you can try resetting your browser settings. This will erase all data from the browser and reset it to factory settings. Internet Explorer – Click the Tools menu or the gear button and select Internet Options. Click on the “Advanced” tab and then click on “Reset”. Check the “Delete personal settings” box and click “Reset” again. Chrome – Click on the Chrome menu button and select “Settings”. Click the “Show advanced settings” link. Scroll down and click on “Reset settings”. Click “Reset” to confirm. Firefox – Click the Firefox menu button and select “?” at the bottom of the menu. Click on the “Troubleshooting Information” option. Click Update Firefox, then click Update Firefox again to confirm. Safari – Force quit Safari by pressing ⌘ Command + ⌥ Option + Esc and selecting Safari from the list. When Safari is closed, press ⇧ Shift and reopen Safari from the Dock or Applications folder. Turn off Wi-Fi and try accessing a website. If the page loads and says you’re not connected, turn the WiFi back on.

Scan for malware

Download AdwCleaner.

Run AdwCleaner after downloading.

Once you have confirmed that you want to run the program, additional files necessary for scanning will be downloaded. This should only take a few moments.

Click the “Scan” button to start the scan.

AdwCleaner will start scanning your computer, which usually takes between 15 and 20 minutes.

After the scan completes, click the “Clean” button.

AdwCleaner removes all malicious files found during the scan.

Download and install the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

The free version includes a full-featured scanner and cleaner for home use. You can download it from After downloading Anti-Malware, run the installer. Choose the free license when prompted. There is also a Mac version. This is the latest version of AdwareMedic, one of the more powerful anti-malware programs for Mac.

Open Anti-Malware and click

“Update now”. This will download any available updates. This helps anti-malware find more malicious files.

Click “Scan Now” to start scanning your computer.

This scan usually takes a little longer than AdwCleaner’s scan.

After the scan completes, click Quarantine All.

This will remove all files found during the scan.

Restart your computer and test the website.

If adware was the reason you couldn’t access certain websites, you should now be able to open them.

Change your DNS settings

Clear DNS settings.

DNS (Domain Name System) is the service that translates domain names into IP addresses so you can connect to websites. If your local DNS files have become corrupted, you may not be able to load certain websites. Flushing DNS deletes all local DNS data and loads a fresh copy. Windows – Press ⊞ Win + R and type cmd to open the command line. Type in ipconfig /flushdns and press ↵ Enter . You will receive a message that the DNS cache has been emptied. You can now close the command line. Mac – Open Terminal from the Utilities folder. Type in dscacheutil -flushcache and press ⏎ Return . Then type sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder and press ⏎ Return to restart the DNS service. You will be asked for your admin password.

Find a new DNS for the connection.

Typically, you’ll connect to the DNS provided by your ISP, but there are many other options. Some even lead to a higher surfing speed. Search the web for “free DNS” to find up-to-date listings of free DNS providers. Usually you will also find speed comparisons. There are usually two addresses: a primary and a secondary. You’ll need both of them right away. Note that not all public DNS allow access to the same content. It is recommended that you use Google or OpenDNS, these offer the highest accessibility.

Connect to a new DNS.

Once you’ve found the server you want to connect to, you’ll need to point your computer to it. Windows – Press ⊞ Win + R and type in ncpa.cpl. This opens the Network Connections window. Right-click on the graphics card and go to “Properties”. Highlight “Internet Protocol Version 4” in the list and click the “Properties” button. Select “Use the following DNS server addresses” and enter the desired addresses. Mac – Open the Apple menu and go to “Control Panel”. Click on the “Network” option and then select your active network. Click on the “Advanced” button and then on the “DNS” tab. Enter the servers you want to connect to.
